Sculpture
Sculpture is the branch of the fine arts that is primarily concerned with the creation of expressive form in three dimensions. It includes a wide range of different kinds of art works
Works of sculpture are produced by three main processes:
- Carving, a reductive process in which the desired form is reached by removing the surplus from a block or similar mass of material such as stone, ivory and wood.
- Modeling, an additive process in which the form is built up in a plastic material.
- Construction or assembling, in which the sculpture is created by joining ready-made objects and units of material that already have a shape of their own.
Different from Western sculptures, Chinese sculpture pieces remain greatly in form of grottoes represented by Mogao Grottoes and Longmen Grottoes, which have been named as the cultural heritage sites by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
